Projects

2021

Proceeds from Salem Native Nursery’s first annual Native Tree, Shrub, and Perennial Sale were donated to the Friends of Salem Woods to help purchase materials for three bridge build projects in Salem Woods (Highland Park). We later donated several trees and shrubs to the Friends of Salem Woods to support their 2021 trail head repair and planting project.

2022

Proceeds from our 2022 sales supported the treatment of ash trees in public parks around Salem against the Emerald Ash Borer. The Emerald Ash Borer is an invasive beetle that infests, eats, and eventually kills all native ash tree species found in the United States. Inoculating ash trees helps them survive against emerald ash borer infestation; treating ash trees has become essential as the emerald ash borer spreads further across the United States. In partnership with SavATree and the City of Salem, Salem Native Nursery helped identify and treat several ash trees at Mary Jane Lee Park and around Salem that were infested by the Emerald Ash Borer.

In partnership with Farm Direct Coop, based in Marblehead, Massachusetts, Salem Native Nursery held its first ever Native Christmas Tree Sale. We offered 12-inch Balsam Firs, a perfect tabletop decoration for any room. The balsam fir is a classic, dark green Christmas tree that is native throughout New England and is commonly copied by artificial tree makers!

2023

Salem Native Nursery partnered with Salem Sound Coastwatch to host its largest project yet in 2023. We installed 125 native plants, representing 35 species of trees, shrubs, and perennials in eight zones at Winter Island Park, on September 9, 2023! This project will help to beautify Winter Island even further, to control erosion along the stone dust walking path, and to make Winter Island one of the most biodiverse public spaces in all of Salem!
